Men's Lacrosse Captures ECAC
Mid-Atlantic Region Championship
Union, N.J. (5/16/10) – Sophomore
Nick Angrisani scored three goals and added an
assist as top-seeded Kean University captured its first ECAC
championship in 15 years with an 11-7 win over No. 3 Richard
Stockton in the Division III Mid-Atlantic Men's Lacrosse
Championship on Sunday.
Senior C.J. Gannon (pictured right) tallied two
goals and two assists to earn Most Outstanding Player honors for
the tournament as the Cougars capped off a 14-6 campaign with their
first ECAC since 1995 when current head coach Shelley Sheiner was a
senior on that squad. It is Kean's fourth overall ECAC title
as the Cougars won Metro crowns in 1990, 1991 and 1995.
Seniors Matt Bell and Josh Dybus each had two
goals for Richard Stockton, which closed out its 2010 campaign at
7-7. The Ospreys reached the title game by knocking off No. 2 seed
Farmingdale, 15-14 in overtime on Saturday.
Kean scored the first five goals of the game, including three in
the first period. Jazimar Bailey scooped up a
rebound in front on the right side and flipped in a shot for a 1-0
Cougar lead with 3:18 into the contest. Kean would hang on to that
lead until the final minute when it scored twice. Scott
Leathem setup Angrisani with 1:05 left and Gannon's
goal with 19 second on the clock handed Kean a 3-0 lead after one.
Gannon would have a hand in the two second period scores as the
Cougars extended their lead to 5-0. He assisted on Bailey's
goal with 12:43 left and the recorded his second. Stockton
would finally get on the board as Wade Veselka found
the back of the net, but Sean Bobal answered with
36 seconds before half as Kean took a 6-1 advantage into the break.
Matt Bologno pulled Stockton closer in the third with
the period's lone goal and Bell's man-up tally 35
seconds into the fourth pushed the Ospreys closer at 6-3.
The Cougars would not let the lead get any closer and answered
with a three-goal run to all but put the game away. Angrisani
scored twice in a 49 second span and defenseman Brian
McCormick added a goal of his own with 7:31 to go as the
Kean lead was boosted back to 9-3.
Leathem finished with a goal and two assists for Kean, which
posted its second win over the Ospreys this season. The Cougars
downed the Ospreys, 11-2 back on April 8 in Pomona, N.J. Senior
goalkeeper John Gesumaria made 10 saves while
Andrew Rau was 10-of-13 on faceoffs with six
ground balls.
