Rowan Ends Kean's Regional
Streak With 8-3 Win
TRENTON, N.J. (5/20/10) – For the third
time this season, Rowan University defeated Kean University, as the
sixth seeded Profs advance in the winner's bracket past the
second-seeded Cougars, 8-3, in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic
Regional at Waterfront Park on Thursday evening.
Rowan halted the Cougars' 13-game winning streak in
regional play, as Kean hadn't lost a game in the regional
since Montclair State University knocked the Cougars out of the
tournament in 2006. The Cougars, who also hadn't lost a
game this season since a 12-4 loss to the Profs on April 29, saw
their current 10-game winning streak snapped.
Junior right-hander Jeff White earned the win for the
Profs, striking out nine and scattering seven hits in eight and
two-thirds innings.
The Profs (26-14-1) will face top-seeded Johns Hopkins
University in a battle between the final two unbeatens in the
bracket on Friday at 4:30 p.m., while the Cougars battle #4
Alvernia University in an elimination game earlier in the day at
1:15 p.m.
Rowan erased a 1-0 deficit, scoring six runs in the bottom of
the third inning by taking advantage of three walks, three straight
run-scoring singles and a wild pitch. With one out, two walks
and an error loaded the bases and senior Dave Lenig
followed with a bases-loaded walk to score sophomore Marc
Magliaro with the tying run. Junior Scott Weaver had the
first of three straight singles for Rowan, driving in the go-ahead
run, while sophomore catcher Nick Turano followed with a
two-run single to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Jordan
Marsch added a RBI single through the right side to plate to
drive in Weaver and Turano gave the Profs a 6-1 lead by coming
across on a wild pitch.
An inning later, Rowan added a run when Magliaro led off with a
single through the left side, stole second and scored on the double
by junior Matt Citro for the 7-1 advantage.
The Cougars threatened in the top of the fifth inning, as junior
third baseman Chris Carrano worked a lead-off walk
and advanced to third base two batters later on an one-out single
by sophomore shortstop Steve Giambrone to put
runners on the corners. Senior second baseman Mike
Moceri followed with a RBI single to left field to score
Carrano, and after a line-out to centerfield, Kean would load the
bases on the Rowan error. However, White got out of the jam
with a pop-out to only allow the one run in the inning.
After Rowan got a run back in the home half of the fifth inning,
White held the Cougars to just one hit over the next three innings.
In the top of the ninth, Kean was able to push across another
run when Carrano walked, advanced to second on a single by pinch
hitter Kyle Walker and scored on a throwing
error. The Cougars would have the bases loaded with the tying
run on deck, before Rowan junior right-hander John
O'Hara came in to record the final out of the game and
earn the save.
Kean took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as
junior designated hitter Ken Gregory led off with
a double and after advancing to third on a single by sophomore
Dylan Laguna, Gregory scored on a sacrifice fly by
junior right-fielder Nick Nolan.
In the win, Turano was 2-of-5 with two RBI and one run scored,
while Marsch finished with three hits, one run and one RBI.
For the Cougars, Laguna was 2-of-5, while Carrano scored two of
the team's three runs.
