NJCU Tops Women's Soccer, 2-1

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (9/29/10) – New Jersey City University junior forward Julia Caseres scored the game-winning goal early in the second half to lead the Gothic Knights to a 2-1 win over Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars (6-2-2, 1-1-1 NJAC) held a 26-7 advantage in shots over the Gothic Knights (7-3, 2-2 NJAC), who pick up their first ever win over the Cougars in 17 all-time meetings.

NJCU took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Ashley Cunha picked up the loose ball on the left side of the box for the goal in the 26th minute.

The Cougars tied the game before halftime, as sophomore Kristen Hager (pictured right) headed in the ball off the corner from Julianna Natale with just under seven minutes left in the first half.

Early in the second half, the Cougars were whistled for a foul in the box and Caseres converted the penalty kick for her NJAC-leading 16th goal of the season in the 53rd minute.

Kean managed 10 more shots in the final 37 minutes of the contest, but were unable to tie the game a second time.

Senior goalkeeper Leandra Russo stopped a pair of shots for Kean, while NJCU goalie Laura Robinson made five saves in the win.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, October 2, when they host Ramapo College in NJAC action at 1 p.m.
