JERSEY CITY, N.J. (9/29/10) – New Jersey
City University junior forward Julia Caseres scored the
game-winning goal early in the second half to lead the Gothic
Knights to a 2-1 win over Kean University in New Jersey Athletic
Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars (6-2-2, 1-1-1 NJAC) held a 26-7 advantage in shots
over the Gothic Knights (7-3, 2-2 NJAC), who pick up their first
ever win over the Cougars in 17 all-time meetings.
NJCU took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when
Ashley Cunha picked up the loose ball on the left side of
the box for the goal in the 26th minute.
The Cougars tied the game before halftime, as sophomore
Kristen Hager (pictured right) headed in the ball
off the corner from Julianna Natale with just
under seven minutes left in the first half.
Early in the second half, the Cougars were whistled for a foul
in the box and Caseres converted the penalty kick for her
NJAC-leading 16th goal of the season in the
53rd minute.
Kean managed 10 more shots in the final 37 minutes of the
contest, but were unable to tie the game a second time.
Senior goalkeeper Leandra Russo stopped a pair
of shots for Kean, while NJCU goalie Laura Robinson made
five saves in the win.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, October 2, when they
host Ramapo College in NJAC action at 1 p.m.
