Jonathan Jones kept up the pace with his
15th straight double-double of the season as the Kean
University men's basketball team got past Moravian College,
62-58, Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
Jones (pictured left) collected 27 points and 15 rebounds as Kean
improved to 11-4. Moravian fell to 7-7 and was led by
Garrett Johnson with 16 points.
Moravian would take a ten point lead, 18-8, with a lay-up with
9:10 to go in the first half. The Cougars responded with a
12-2 run to tie the contest at 20-20 on a three-pointer from
freshman Michael Burton with 4:40 before the
intermission, and a jumper by Jones with 13 seconds before halftime
would send the squads to the locker room tied at 26.
Jones opened the scoring in the second half for Kean, but a
three-point play by Moravian sophomore Blake English put
the Greyhounds ahead 29-28. Moravian would push its lead to
six points, 36-30, on a pair of free throws from Chris
Cullen with 15:24 remaining. Kean would go on a 10-2 run
to take a 40-38 lead on a three-pointer by freshman guard
Andrew Kirey at 10:05.
The squads traded the lead five times over the next five
minutes. Gula hit a three-pointer 25 seconds later to put the
Greyhounds up 50-46, but Moravian would not score for the next 5:42
as Kean ran off eight straight points. Jones tied the game at
50 with a lay-up while Burton put Kean ahead for good, 52-50, with
3:08 to go.
Cameron Cullen pulled Moravian within two points, 54-52, on a
pair of free throws at 1:10. Jones finished off a 5-0 Kean
run with a dunk with 36 seconds remaining. Chris Cullen hit a
pair of three pointers to get Moravian to three points away, 61-58,
before a free throw from Burton with four seconds to play sealed
the win for Kean.
Jones had two steals to go with his double-double while Burton
finished with nine points, three steals and two assists.
Kirey (pictured right) and sophomore guard Anthony
Gibson each had eight points in the win.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Rutgers-Newark.
