UNION, N.J. (1/29/11) – The Kean University men's volleyball team fell to visiting Eastern Mennonite University in straight sets in a NECVA – Metro Division match on Saturday morning and rebounded past Medgar Evers College in straight sets in the nightcap.
For the Cougars, freshman Christian Portera (pictured left) finished with a team-high six kills and two assisted blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Chris Moise led the Royals (4-4, 3-0 NECVA-Metro) with a match-high nine kills, as EMU defeated the Cougars (2-4, 1-2 NECVA-Metro) for the second time in a week, winning the match in three games, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18.
Junior Nolan Prock added a match-high nine kills, six assisted blocks and four service aces, while senior middle blocker Frankie Coto added five assisted blocks. Sophomore setter John Barry dished out 24 assists for the Royals.
Kean sophomore Steve Vahalla added four kills and three digs, while rookie Naveed Khawaja dished out 16 assists.
In the nightcap, the Cougars defeated visiting Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (25-6, 25-14, 25-8) in non-conference action. Kean was led by freshman Eric Cooney who had 11 kills (.643 attack percentage). Junior Sam Haimann added five kills and 11 digs while Portera tallied seven kills.
The Cougars return to NECVA action on Tuesday, February 1, when Kean hosts Philadelphia Biblical University at 7:30 p.m.
