Union, N.J. (11/19/11) – Senior Noel Mathis and junior Naimah Clemons combined for 33 points as the Kean University women's basketball team defeated visiting Salisbury University, 71-50, in the Cougar Classic.

With the win Kean improves to 2-0 while the loss is the first of the season for the Sea Gulls.

The Cougars never trailed in the matchup and used 9-0 run late in the first half to take a 30-13 lead.  Freshman AnnaRose Pierre scored five in the spurt.  Kean extended their lead to as many as 22 as Mathis drained a trey to give Kean a 37-15 advantage with a little over two minutes to go before the break.

Kean led by the halftime score of 37-18 as Clemons recorded 10 first-half points.

The Cougars kept a comfortable lead throughout the second half and had their biggest advantage of the day when Clemons' layup gave KU a 61-24 lead halfway through the second half. 

Junior Simone Smith tallied eight points and 10 rebounds while Pierre finished with nine points.  Clemons finished with an untraditional double-double of 17 points and 10 steals while Mathis had 16 points, seven rebounds and nine steals in the win.

Rookie Anna Hackett was tied for today's game-high points with 17 for the Sea Gulls while junior Katie McGahagan added a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Lewis & Clark 59, Oneonta State 58

In today's second matchup of the afternoon the Pioneers of Lewis & Clark College edged Oneonta State, 59-58. 

Oneonta's (0-2) Samantha Szkotak led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds while Kristina Williams led Lewis & Clark (2-0) with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

The Pioneers held just a two point lead at halftime (30-28) and the two teams held a tight battle in the second half and the lead changed 10 times. Lewis & Clark had their largest lead of the half with just under five minutes to go as sophomore Kathlene Howe hit a layup for a 54-47 lead.  The Red Dragons then went on to score the next five points to take a one point lead senior Madison Slagle put Oneonta on top 55-54 with 34 seconds to go.  Neva Hauser responded with a trey from the Pioneers to go back on top 57-55 with 23 seconds on the board and with seven seconds to go scored what would be the winning points with two free throws to put the score at 59-55.  Sophomore Alyshia Crawford hit a three-pointer with just one second to go, but it wasn't enough with just one tick remaining.
