Women's Basketball Falls in OT at DeSales, 85-78

Center Valley, Pa. (12/7/11) – The DeSales University women's basketball team nailed four free throws down the stretch to defeat Kean University, 85-78, Wednesday evening in overtime non-conference action.

Playing in her first game this season, senior Brittany Powell was tied with a team-high 24 points as Kean fell to 6-2 this season.  With the win DeSales improves to 4-3.

The matchup remained close throughout as the Bulldogs went into the break with just a three point edge (36-33). 

DeSales held on to their advantage in the second half and built their lead to double digits with under 10 minutes to go in regulation.  The Bulldogs led by as many as 12 as Colleen Gavin picked up two points from the charity stripe.  The Cougars made their move and with under four minutes to go finished the half on an 11-3 run and sent the game into overtime with just three ticks on the clock.  With 50 seconds remaining junior Naimah Clemons nailed a trey to pull Kean within two, 69-67.  27 seconds later, she would tie the game with two free throws, before DeSales' Cherelle Simmons would put the Bulldogs on top with a bucket with just nine seconds to go.  Senior Noel Mathis then forced overtime with a layup with just three seconds remaining.

DeSales then controlled the overtime with six made free throws and two from behind the arc to pull away with the win.

Clemons finished the game with 24 points playing all 45 minutes.  Junior Danielle McFadden added 12 rebounds while Briana Winston added six points and nine rebounds.

Kean returns home to face Messiah College on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
