UNION, N.J. (3/1/11) – Outside hitters Christian Portera (pictured left) and Steve Vahalla combined for 41 kills, 10 digs and five blocks to lead the Kean University men's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Lancaster Bible College in North East Collegiate Volleyball Association-Metro action on Tuesday evening.
The teams split the first two sets, before the Cougars (7-14, 3-5 NECVA-Metro) won the final two games for the four-set victory (25-19, 30-32, 29-27, 25-19).
Junior outside hitter Jesse Corbin led the Chargers (1-17, 0-11 NECVA-Metro) with 11 kills, eight digs and two solo blocks.
After the Cougars led for most of the opening set to take a 1-0 lead, the two teams battled back-and-forth in the second set, before the Chargers fought off three set points and scored the final two points to win the second set 32-30.
In the third set, Lancaster Bible again fought off three set points, however the Cougars
closed out the set with the final two points to take a 2-1 lead with the 29-27 win.
The Cougars closed out the conference match, as they never trailed in the fourth set for the 25-19 win.
Portera had 21 kills and four assisted blocks, while Vahalla added 20 kills and seven digs in the win. Junior setter Sam Haimann dished out 34 assists and added six kills, three service aces and three assisted blocks. Rookie Alx Draughan (pictured right) had eight kills and eight total blocks and freshman Tom Kemmerle had a match-high 18 digs in the win.
For the Chargers, sophomore A.J. Longacre had 10 kills and six digs, while setter B.J. Boosz had 29 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
The Cougars face Philadelphia Biblical University on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m.
