Union, N.J. (3/26/11) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team scored eight second half goals to surge past the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 15-4, Saturday afternoon in the Skyline Conference opener for both.
The Cougars improve to 5-3 overall while the loss drops the Golden Eagles to 3-3 this season.
Even though it was an unseasonably cold and windy afternoon, both teams pressed on as there were 12 combined penalties and 68 total shots in the matchup.
Kean pushed through first scoring the game's first three goals, including two within less than 30 seconds of each other. Freshman Richard Cheifitz scored the game's first goal with 11:41 to go in the first quarter and sophomore Brad Mills followed with a goal 27 seconds later off a pass from Cheifitz to put the score at 2-0. Sophomore Tom Clifford (pictured left) made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal with 8:19 to go. Both teams would trade single goals to close out the first quarter.
The Dolphins would edge closer to make the score, 5-3, as senior Mike Shea netted an unassisted goal with 7:12 to go in the second quarter. The Cougars closed out the first half with two goals from junior Nick Angrisani and Cheifitz to send Kean into the break with a four goal advantage.
The Cougars then dominated the second half, outscoring the Dolphins, 8-1, to earn their first conference win of the season.
Kean was led by Angrisani who recorded two goals, four groundballs and caused a turnover. Freshman Dan Nesson added two goals while senior Justin Lappen was 10-of-14 on faceoff opportunities with five groundballs and one caused turnover.
Sophomore Lane Zierten earned the win in goal. He stopped 10 shots in the win.
Kean returns to action on Saturday when they travel to take on Centenary College at 3:30 p.m.
