UNION, N.J. (4/22/11/) – Rowan University
swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from
host Kean University on Friday afternoon, as the Profs blanked the
Cougars in a pair of five-inning shutouts, 11-0 and 9-0.
GAME ONE: 17-Hit Attack Lifts Rowan Past Cougars,
11-0
Left fielder Casey Roselle and second baseman
Ashley Landi each were 4-of-4 to lead the Rowan 17-hit
attack, as the Profs (24-9, 10-4 NJAC) scored 10 runs in the first
three innings en-route to the 11-0, five-inning victory.
Senior first baseman Katie Yard was 1-of-1 with
a walk for the Cougars (9-21, 7-7 NJAC).
Rowan scored three runs In the first inning on four hits and one
error, as junior Ashley Minch had an RBI double and Landi
added a RBI single
up the middle for the early 3-0 lead.
After adding a pair of runs in the second inning, Rowan doubled
their run total with five more runs in the top of the third inning
on five hits and three Kean errors. Minch provided the big
hit of the inning with the bases-clearing double to right center
for the 10-0 lead.
Rowan added one more run in the top of the fifth inning on the
solo homerun by first baseman Stephanie Labas.
Roselle had three runs scored, while Minch was 2-of-3 with five
RBI and two runs scored. Junior right-hander Amanda
Singer earned the complete-game shutout victory, allowing four
hits and stirking out five.
Shortstop Alicia Banz (pictured left) had a
double for the Cougars.
GAME TWO: Early Lead Lifts Rowan to 9-0
Win
The Profs scored all nine runs in the first two innings en-route
to the 9-0 win over the Cougars.
Labas led Rowan with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored,
while junior right-hander Jamie Minix earned the win, as
she allowed four hits and had four strikeouts in four innings of
work.
Rowan took early lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Labas ripped a three-run homerun down the left field line.
An inning later, Rowan added six more runs, with the big hit coming
off the bat of Landi, who homered to left field with runners on
first and second.
The Cougars had the bases loaded in each of the first two
innings, but were unable to get a run across as Minix got out of
the jam with a groundout and strike-out to preserve the shutout in
the first two innings.
Landi was 2-of-3 with three RBi and one run scored, while
Roselle was 2-of-3 with two runs scored.
For the Cougars, rookie left fielder Sandra
Binkiewicz (pictured right) was 2-of-2, while freshman
Megan Cegielski and sophomore Katie
Schuh each added a hit. Freshman Rebecca
Rotola pitched a combined 5.1 innings of relief between
the two games, as she scattered 11 hits and one earned run between
the doubleheader.
