CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (4/3/11) – The Kean
University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to
host DeSales University on Sunday afternoon, as the host Bulldogs
posted a 12-4 win in the opener and an 8-0 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Seven-Run Third-Inning Lifts Bulldogs to
Six Inning Win, 12-4
DeSales University exploded for seven runs in the third inning,
before closing out the six-inning victory with two runs in the
fifth and three runs in the sixth inning.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
junior shortstop Alicia Banz doubled to left field
and would score two batters later on a RBI single by senior
Nicole Scarillo (pictured left).
Kean extended the lead to 3-0 two innings later, as senior first
baseman Katie Yard had a two-run double to score
Banz and freshman Kelly Moorehead.
In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs
on seven hits to take the 7-3 lead. Second baseman Jen
Lococo had a two-run homerun and third baseman Shelly
McCarthy followed three batters later with a three-run blast
to break the game open.
The Cougars cut the deficit to 7-4 in the top of the fifth
inning on a RBI single by Yard, however the Bulldogs were able to
close out the win with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and
three runs in the sixth.
Yard finished 2-of-3 with three RBI, while Scarillo was 3-of-4
with one RBI.
For the Bulldogs, Lococo was 3-of-4 with four RBI.
GAME TWO: DeSales Tosses No-Hitter, Five-Run Fourth
Inning Closes Out Kean
Junior Katie Morrissey tossed the five-inning
no-hitter, not allowing a base-runner until the fourth inning, and
the Bulldogs scored three runs in the third and five runs in the
fourth to sweep the doubleheader with the 8-0, five-inning
victory.
The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, as
shortstop Kate Steiner had a RBI single and designated player
Christine Petrilla had a two-run single for the 3-0
lead.
An inning later, DeSales broke the game open with five more
runs, capped by a three-run homerun by Lococo.
The Cougars managed three walks in the fourth inning, however
stranded a pair of runners on base as the inning ended.
Morrissey recorded six strikeouts to improve to3-2.
Senior right-hander Courtney Smyth (1-7)
suffered the loss in both games for the Cougars.
Kean returns to action on Tuesday, April 5, when they host
Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
