Maritime Slips Past Men's Lacrosse, 7-6

Throggs Neck, N.Y. (4/9/11) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team lost their first Skyline Conference match of the season as SUNY Maritime edged the Cougars, 7-6, Saturday afternoon.

In a defensive battle that saw no score through the first 32 minutes of action, Maritime (6-6, 4-0 Skyline) broke through first with an unassisted goal with 12:28 to go in the third quarter.  Kean quickly tied things up with a goal from rookie Richard Cheifitz off a pass from freshman Todd Petrone with 11:36 remaining in the third.  The Cougars took the lead on a Brad Mills goal with 6:26 on the clock.  Maritime countered and scored the game's next four goals crossing over into the fourth quarter to take a 5-2 lead.

After trading goals it was Kean's turn as they scored three straight to tie the game at six-all.  Junior Nick Angrisani started the run off a pass from Tom Clifford with 8:14 to go in the game.  Clifford scored a goal of his own with 4:44 on the clock and just 40 seconds later, Angrisani (pictured left) tied the game up, again off a pass from Clifford.  But Maritime found the back of the net with 1:10 remaining for the game-winning goal for the final of 7-6.

The Cougars held a slight edge in total shots (33-29) while Maritime held the edge in groundballs (33-28).  Sophomore Lane Zierten stopped 10 shots in goal for the Cougars in the loss.

Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to take on Farmingdale State College at 4 p.m.
