SALISBURY, Md. (5/12/11) – The Kean University softball team opened the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament, falling to #2 Emory University, 6-1, on Thursday morning at the Salisbury Regional.
A pair of homeruns led the 11-hit attack for the Eagles (41-2-1), while Kean senior catcher Nicole Scarillo (pictured left) was 1-of-3 with a double for the Cougars (16-26).
The Cougars now face the loser of the #4 Virginia Wesleyan College/#5 Christopher Newport University game on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
The Eagles, the top seed in the Salisbury Regional, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Dana Goodenough had a one-out double to centerfield and designated player Megan Light followed with a two-run homerun to right centefield to open the scoring for the Eagles.
An inning later, shortstop Jennifer Haag extended the lead to 3-0 with the one-out solo homerun.
The Cougars threatened in the top of the fifth inning, as Scarillo had a one-out double left field. After sophomore Sam Gniazdowski replaced the senior catcher at second base, rookie Kelly Moorehead (pictured right) singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Kean plated its first run when senior first baseman Katie Yard followed with the squeeze bunt to score Gniazdowski from third.
Emory extended the lead back out to three runs in the bottom half of the inning on the RBI single by freshman centerfielder Lauren Gorodetsky for the 4-1 lead.
The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the sixth inning, however junior right-hander Bridget Holloway had one of her five strikeouts to end the inning for the Eagles.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles closed out the scoring with a two-run single by Goodenough for the five-run lead and the Eagles retired the side in the top of the seventh to advance in the winner's bracket.
For the Cougars, second baseman Katie Schuh and left fielder Sandra Binkiewicz each added hits.
Holloway, who retired 13 straight spanning the first through fifth innings, went the distance, as she allowed just four hits and no walks, while striking out five.
Goodenough was 2-of-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while catcher Jessica Boni added a pair of hits.
