Mahwah, N.J. (5/2/11) – The Kean University baseball team edged Ramapo College, 6-5, Monday afternoon to conclude the NJAC regular season and in the process earn the top seed in the upcoming NJAC Tournament that begins on Tuesday.
The Cougars finished in a tie with Rowan University in the NJAC standings as both had a 14-4 record. By virtue of tiebreakers, Kean will be the #1 seed and will square off against #6 Montclair State University on Tuesday, May 3rd at 3:30 p.m. at Jim Hynes Stadium.
In today's action, sophomore Sam Fourre, making his first start of the season, earned the win. Fourre (1-1) allowed just three hits and four runs, zero earned, in seven innings of action.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Cougars went on top, 4-1 in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and no outs, catcher Sean Kelly recorded an RBI fielder's choice to knot the game at one. With two outs, and after reloading the bases, senior Chris Carrano (pictured left) delivered a two RBI single to break the game open. Junior Lee Cavico rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to put Kean ahead 4-1.
The Roadrunners (29-9, 11-7 NJAC) inched closer and scored two in the bottom of the second aided by two Cougar miscues.
The Cougars scored a single run in the fourth to put the score at 5-3 as Cavico recorded a two-out, RBI single, driving in Carrano who reached on his own single. Ramapo came right back with a single run of their own in the bottom of the fifth after a Kean error.
Kean senior Kyle Walker drove in what would be the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to give KU a 6-4 lead. Ramapo did not go quietly, leading off the inning with a double and RBI single, putting the tying run at first. Sophomore Greg Baruka then entered the game and forced the first batter his faced to pop-up on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Baruka (pictured right) laid out for the catch and doubled off the runner on first to quickly give Kean two outs. He then retired the final batter of the game on a groundout to seal the win with his first save of the season.
Offensively Carrano and Cavico each had two hits and two RBI while senior Ken Gregory was 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
