Women's Soccer Tops Previously Unbeaten NJCU, 1-0

Union, N.J. (9/28/11) – The Kean University women's soccer team scored the game's only goal late in the first half as the Cougars edged previously unbeaten New Jersey City University, 1-0, Wednesday evening in NJAC action.

The loss is the first for the Gothic Knights, currently ranked 24th in the latest D3soccer.com Weekly National Poll, who fall to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  Kean improves to a perfect 4-0 in the NJAC and 7-2-1 overall.

Senior Danielle Esposito (pictured left) was able to capitalize in the 31st minute of the first half after taking a pass from junior Carly Seidel who brought the ball up the center of the field.  Esposito then took the ball from the right side and fired a shot high into the net for the game-winner.

The Cougars outshot NJCU, 22-6, while both teams attempted four corner kicks.

Freshman Kaitlin King recorded one save while netminder Brittany Hoffman added six in the loss.

The Cougar defense was able to hold off the Gothic Knights to just two shots on goal.  NJCU is currently ranked in the top 5 nationally in Division III in most scoring statistical categories.

Kean returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Ramapo College for a 3 p.m. matchup.
