UNION, N.J. (9/3/11) – Freshman Carly Snyder scored twice and sophomore Shelby Wallace had a pair of assists to lead the Kean University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's College (LI) in the season opening Cougar Classic on Saturday afternoon.
For the Cougars (1-0), senior Danielle Esposito netted the final goal of the game, while sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Flowers made 10 saves for the Golden Eagles (1-1).
After a scoreless first half, Kean got on the board in the 64th minute when Snyder scored off the assist from rookie Shelby Pedersen. Just 40 seconds later, Wallace fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar and back into play, where Snyder picked up the carom and fired into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
With 2:30 remaining, Wallace's shot was saved by Flowers, however Esposito one-timed the rebound past the keeper for the final goal of the game.
The Cougars held a 21-2 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the second game of the Cougar Classic, Richard Stockton College defeated Muhlenberg College, 2-1.
Kean faces Muhlenberg on Sunday at 1 p.m., while Richard Stockton batted St. Joseph's at 3:30 p.m.
