Men's Volleyball Wins Pair of Skyline Matches

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1/28/12) – The Kean University men's volleyball team recorded a pair of wins in Skyline Conference action, as the Cougars defeated New Jersey City University (3-2) and NYU-Poly (3-0) on Saturday afternoon in a quad-match at New Jersey City University.

Kean (2-1, 2-0 Skyline) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets in defeating NJCU in five sets (25-16, 22-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13) in the Cougars' first Skyline match in program history.

After the Cougars captured the first set by nine points (25-16), the next four sets were decided by three or less points, with the final three sets decided by just two points each.

The Cougars finished with 17 total blocks, as freshman Kyle Farley (pictured left) had two solo and 10 assisted blocks and junior Steve Vahalla finished with six assisted blocks in addition to his team-high 18 kills.

Against NJCU (2-2, 1-2 Skyline), the Cougars trailed 22-19 in the fourth set, before Kean blocked three straight attack attempts by the Gothic Knights, as Farley recorded a solo block and two assisted blocks with Vahalla to give Kean the 23-22 lead.  An attack error for the Cougars tied the match back at 23-23, before Kean closed out the set with the final two points to force the fifth and decisive set.

In that fifth set, Kean took a 12-9 lead, however the Gothic Knights fought back to tie the match at 12-all and again at 13-all.  Vahalla closed out the Skyline win with back-to-back kills.

Senior outside hitter Christian Portera added 13 kills, while senior Sam Haimann totaled 10 kills.  Rookie setter Alex Barnhard had 27 assists against NJCU.

In the straight set win over NYU-Poly (25-22, 25-18, 25-16), Vahalla (pictured right) led the Cougars with eight kills and just two errors in 19 attack attempts (.316 hitting percentage), while freshman John Cunningham added five kills.  Sophomore Arthur Kosakowski finished with six assisted blocks, while freshman Ron Dunn totaled four kills, 12 assists, two service aces and four digs.
