Claremont, Calif. (3/19/12) –
Pomona-Pitzer used two big hits, including a two-run shot, to
propel past the Kean University baseball team by the final of 4-2
Monday afternoon in a rescheduled contest.
The Cougars fall to 10-4 this season while the win improves the
Sagehens to 12-9-1.
Both teams were locked in a pitchers' duel though the
first five innings of action. In that time starter
Kevin Herget allowed just three singles with six
strikeouts. Kean was the first to get on the board in the top
of the sixth as senior Steve Sanguiliano lined a
one-out double into the gap. After swiping third, sophomore
Joe O'Connor (pictured left) drove him in
with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Sagehens answered back
as senior James Campbell launched a two-run homerun in the
bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
Pomona-Pitzer added insurance in the seventh as sophomore
Travis Bowers led off the frame with a double. After
scattering a single and two outs in the inning, the Cougars elected
to load the bases with an intentional walk. Junior Erik
Munzer then delivered a two-run single through the hole for a
4-1 lead.
The Cougars mounted a rally in the ninth all with two
outs. Freshman Andy Lopez reached on a
miscue followed by a pinch-hit walk to senior Vinny
Galya. Sophomore Shane Alvarez
added a single to load the bases. Senior D.J.
Breckenridge brought home a run with a bases-loaded walk
to put the score at 4-2. But reliever Leo Rosetti
was able to nail down the save with a groundball to end the
threat.
Herget (3-1) allowed four runs and 10 hits while fanning 10 and
walking two. Offensively junior Nick Ramagli was
2-for-4.
Kean returns to action on Tuesday evening when they face west
coast foe Chapman University at 7 p.m. local time.
