UNION, N.J. (3/28/12) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team took an early 4-0 lead en-route to defeating Farmingdale State University, 10-6, in the Skyline Conference opener for the Cougars on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Richard Cheifitz led the Cougars (7-3, 1-0 Skyline) with three goals and goalkeeper Lane Zierten made nine saves in the victory. For the Rams (2-7, 0-2 Skyline), Bobby Thomas had two goals and one assist.
Kean scored the first four goals of the game, as Cheifitz opened the game with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the contest. Junior attack Sean Bobal (pictured left) netted back-to-back goals (9:12, 8:27), before senior Nick Angrisani gave the Cougars the 4-0 lead with the unassisted goal with 3:22 remaining.
Thomas got the Rams on the board with just 63 seconds left in the quarter to pull within 4-1.
Farmingdale State opened the second quarter with goals by Dan Cozier and Ryan Oswald to pull within a goal at 4-3. Angrisani and Thomas traded goals, as Kean held a 5-4 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars scored the only two goals of the third quarter and scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 9-4 following back-to-back goals by Cheifitz. The Rams netted a pair of goals, before freshman Jonathan Foss closed out the game with the unassisted goal.
Foss won 9-of-14 faceoffs and had eight groundballs, while Angrisani added two goals, five groundballs and two caused turnovers.
For the Rams, goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal made nine saves and Josh Lamantia picked up six groundballs.
