UNION, N.J. (3/6/12) – Junior attack
Lyndsey Cannon scored a game-high six goals,
however the Kean University women's lacrosse team fell to
Western Connecticut State University, 16-11, in non-conference
action on Tuesday afternoon.
WestConn (2-0) scored four of the game's last six goals to
pull away from the Cougars (1-1). Sophomore midfielder
Hyla Costello led the Colonials with three goals and two
assists.
The Colonials took a 5-1 lead midway through the first half, as
senior attack Brianna Mitterando had a goal and an
assist. Cannon scored her second goal of the game with just
under seven minutes remaining to pull Kean to within 5-2, before
the two teams exchanged goals to end the half with WestConn holding
a 6-3 edge.
After WestConn opened the second-half scoring, Cannon (pictured
left) and sophomore Ciara Mastrodomenico netted
back-to-back goals for Kean to pull within 7-5 less than four
minutes into the half. WestConn scored four of the next five
goals to extend the lead to 11-6 with 15:59 remaining, before Kean
answered with three of the next four to pull back within 12-9 at
the 12:20 mark.
The Colonials pushed the lead out to 15-9 with three straight
goals en-route to the five-goal victory.
Junior attack Stephanie Tocko finished with two
goals for Kean, while Cannon added three groundballs, three draw
controls and three caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper
Jules Keeley made 11 saves for Kean.
In the victory, senior midfielder Jessica Bouwman
netted three goals, while junior attack Devon Edwards
totaled two goals, one assists and eight draw controls.
Goalkeeper Karli Portnoy made 10 saves in the win.
Kean resumes action on Friday, March 9, when the Cougars host
Manhattanville College at 4 p.m.
