Erika Jones had a double-double, and sophomore
AnnaRose Pierre chipped in with 17 points to lead
the Kean University women's basketball past Rutgers-Camden,
61-54 on Saturday afternoon.
Jones led all scorers with 24 points and 15 rebounds while senior
Kyanne Sager (pictured left) chipped in 13
rebounds. The Cougars have won 15 straight games in the
series against Rutgers-Camden and hold a 41-17 all-time lead.
In a game of long runs, Kean (3-8) raced to a 20-10 lead, aided
by a seven-point run, and held a 24-13 advantage before
Rutgers-Camden scored the final 16 points of the first half and
tacked on the first four of the second half. Sophomore
Lillian Chukwueze scored five of her eight first-half
points during this run.
With Rutgers-Camden holding a 40-33 advantage, the Cougars ran
off 11 straight points to take the lead for good. Pierre notched
six points in the run, including a game-tying layup and two foul
shots that put the Cougars ahead to stay, 42-40. Although the
Scarlet Raptors cut the deficit to one point (50-49), Jones
steadied the Cougars down the stretch, including nine out of
Kean's 11 points during one span to build a 55-49
advantage.
Brittany Turner paced the Scarlet Raptors with 17
points, while Monica Burch added 11 and Chukwueze
collected a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday night with a 6 p.m.
non-conference game at FDU-Florham while Kean hosts Rutgers-Newark
on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
