Women's Basketball Opens 2013-14 Season at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (11/16/13) – Sophomore Jazmine Davis had 22 rebounds and just missed a double-double as the Kean University women's basketball program opened its season with a 59-42 setback at the Swarthmore Tipoff Tournament against the host Garnet. It was the first game of the year for both sides.

Simone Smith started the season's scoring for Kean with the game's first point, and Shay Collins hit a layup to give the Cougars an early 3-0 lead. But the hosts recovered and scored the next seven points, re-taking a lead they would never surrender again.

Smith led Kean with 12 points and was second on the team with eight rebounds. Davis (pictured left) had those 22 boards – including seven off the offensive glass – and finished with nine points. Kean shot its free throws well (8-11) but missed all six attempts from behind the arc in the game.

Swarthmore was led by Katie Lytle and Elle Larsen, who combined for 28 points. Lytle also pulled down 19 boards on her own to lead the Garnet in that column.

The Cougars won the battle in the paint 30-22 and had 16 points off of turnovers against 10 for the hosts. Kean also had more second chance points (10-4) and more points off the bench (18-17).

The Cougars will remain in Swarthmore for one more matchup, where they will take on Cabrini College at 1 p.m. in the tournament's consolation game.
