Glassboro, N.J. (12/7/13) – The Rowan
University women's basketball team broke an 83-all deadlock
with a three-pointer with one second to go, giving them an 86-83
win over Kean University in NJAC action.
With the scored tied at 76-all and just about five minutes to go in
the contest, guard Bria Hill netted five points with a
trey and later two free throws in the span of 40 seconds to give
the Profs (2-5, 2-2 NJAC) a small cushion. The Cougars (4-4,
2-2 NJAC) answered with a 7-2 run as junior AnnaRose
Pierre knotted the game at 83-all with 2:40 on the
clock. The score would remain that way as Kean was unable to
convert two free throws or two shot attempts while Rowan missed one
basket of their own along with four turnovers. With seven
seconds on the clock, Hill was on the free throw line for a
one-and-one opportunity, though she failed to put her team ahead
from the charity stripe, teammate Anyssa Sanchez was able
to pull down the offensive board and Hill turned that opportunity
into a win as she nailed a trey with virtually no time left.
Senior Simone Smith (pictured left) led all
players with a game-high 26 points while recording a double-double
with 10 rebounds. Pierre registered 17 points and seven
rebounds as teammates Essence Casey and
Stephanie Carlone each tallied 10 points.
Hill finished with 14 points. Rookie Valerie
Garofalo scored a career-high 19 points while sophomore guard
Kaitlin Schullstrom contributed with 14 points and eight
rebounds. Guard Jade Bonder followed with 13 points
and center Kate Matthews chipped in with 10.
