UNION, N.J. (2/12/13) – The Kean University men's volleyball team sailed past New Jersey City University in a 3-0 match on Tuesday night. The Cougars were led by senior Steve Vahalla and sophomore Ed Jedziniak, who both recorded double-digits in points.
Kean took the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores and was never truly threatened all evening. Vahalla ripped off six-straight service points early in the first set, including three aces. Overall, the Cougars outhit NJCU by a .284 to .052 margin and had nearly twice as many kills as the visitors.
The Kean defense was outstanding, especially in the final two sets where it held NJCU to a .000 hitting percentage. Junior libero Tom Kemmerle (pictured left) led Kean with four digs.
Cougar setter Ron Dunn also had a nice night, collecting 32 assists and contributing a pair of kills to the Kean offense. Nick Poh was a bright spot for NJCU, and finished the night hitting .571.
Both sides came into the match with 2-1 Skyline records, and with the victory Kean moves clear of the Gothic Knights in the standings and raises its overall record to 5-3.
The Cougars will return to Harwood Arena on Sunday to close out their homestand with a pair of matches against The Sage Colleges and Purchase College. First serve is set for 12 noon.
