Seniors Score Sevens as Men's Basketball Wraps Up the Year at Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (2/13/13)Michael Burton scored 15 points and Kenny Pace poured in 12 off the bench for Kean University but Rutgers-Newark got the better of the Cougars, 79-62, in NJAC men's basketball action on Wednesday. The matchup marked the end of the season for Kean and the final collegiate game for seniors Anthony Gibson, Mike Shaughnessy and Tramane Miller.

Kean held a six point-lead after Gibson nailed a trey at the 10-minute mark of the first half, and kept the game within reach a good deal of the way. The score was knotted 29-29 at the break; Kean made four more three-pointers than the Scarlet Raiders in the first half, but the 25-11 rebound advantage held by Rutgers-Newark was a harbinger of the second-half story.

The Scarlet Raiders shot 60 percent from the floor in the final act and earned 48 points in the paint to Kean's 20 over the course of the night. Christian Garcia led the hosts with 26 points.

The three Kean seniors all scored exactly seven points in the contest. Remarkably, Miller (pictured left) earned his total in just three minutes of work. The 5-9 guard shot 2-of-3 from the field – including his first collegiate three-pointer – and knocked down both of his free throws to boot.

Kean ends the season with a 7-18 mark, while Rutgers-Newark rises to 19-6 and has earned the second seed in the upcoming NJAC Tournament.
