Ninth Inning Rally Sends Brockport Past Baseball, 7-5

Union, N.J. (2/24/13) – The College at Brockport scored five runs in the top of the ninth to surge past the #7 Kean University baseball team by a final of 7-5 Sunday afternoon.

Junior Mike Gianni got things started with an RBI double down the line to put the score at 5-3.  A fly ball would move Gianni to third with one out.  Kean traded a run for an out on the next play, as senior Jake Coleman grounded out to short, to inch closer at 5-4.  With two outs, Kyle Tracey kept the inning alive with a bunt single to third.  After stealing second and moving into scoring position, senior Mike Wheatley walked to put the go-ahead run aboard.  Senior Nick Bunce took advantage and doubled into the gap to put Brockport ahead for good.  Junior Dan Hurlimann added insurance with an RBI single to left.

Brockport (1-0) scored a single run in the top of the second on a bases loaded walk from Corey Hamula to take a 1-0 lead.  Kean (1-1) answered right back and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the same inning.  Sophomore Anthony Fischetti (pictured left) got things started with an RBI single and sophomore James Lyczkowski added another with an RBI sacrifice bunt.

Kean added to their lead with two runs in the fifth aided by two miscues from the Golden Eagles.  Rookie Matt Meleo recorded an RBI sacrifice fly and Fischetti scored on an error.

The Golden Eagles and Cougars traded runs in the sixth as Bunce crossed the plate on a wild pitch and junior Joe O'Connor scored off an RBI bloop single from junior Nick Zucchero.

Junior Ethan Selby (1-0) earned the win after facing just one batter in the contest.  Junior Justin McCarthy picked up the save after tossing a one-two-three ninth inning.  Starter Travis Renwick worked into a no-decision after allowing five runs, three earned, and six hits in five and a third innings.

Senior Sam Fourre (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for Kean.  He allowed four runs and four hits in an inning of work.  Senior Kevin Herget didn't factor into the decision after fanning seven in seven and two thirds innings.  He allowed two runs and four hits.

Offensively Fischetti and junior Shane Alvarez each picked up two hits for the Cougars.  For Brockport, Bunce and junior Pete Wilson also collected two hits apiece.

Kean returns to action on Tuesday when they host Moravian College at 3 p.m.
