UNION, N.J (2/6/13) - Junior Floriana Borova scored 28 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead William Paterson University to a 70-60 victory over the Kean University women's basketball team on Wednesday evening.
Senior Erika Jones recorded her 12th straight double-double, notching 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore AnnaRose Pierre added 14 points, and freshman Caitlin Orlando (pictured left) scored 10 off the bench for the Cougars (5-16). Junior Dana Jeter chipped in with a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Shakira Negron scored 11 points to help lead the Pioneers (17-6).
The first half was a see-saw affair, with six ties and seven lead changes, and no team leading by more than eight points. The Pioneers had their biggest lead of the opening stanza with 7:02 remaining, as junior Brittany Ennis connected on a lay-up to cap an 11-4 run. The Cougars answered back with a 13-0 run, with Pierre chipping in four points, culminating with a three pointer from Orlando to give the Cougars a 30-25 advantage. The Pioneers ended the half on a 6-0 run, capped off by a halftime buzzer beater trey by freshman Jessi Corredor.
Borova led all scorers in the half with 10, while Pierre tallied seven for the Cougars.
The first 10 minutes of the second half were equally as close, with no team leading by more than four points. Down by four (56-52), the Pioneers battled back, and ended the game on an 18-4 run over the final 6:32 of the contest. Borova sparked the run with nine points in the span.
Senior Kyanne Sager recorded six points and seven rebounds during the second stanza for the Cougars.
The Cougars close out their home slate on Saturday, February 9th, as they take on in-state rival #8/7 Montclair State University at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Pioneers remain on the road as they take on Rutgers-Camden at the same time.
