BEVERLY, Mass. (3/10/13) – The Kean University men's volleyball team earned a straight-set upset of No. 14 Rivier University and parlayed that success into another 3-0 match against Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon. Senior Steve Vahalla led the Cougars offensively and was named to the all-tournament team.
Against Rivier each set was tight. Kean won the first by the two-point minimum, with the punctuation mark coming from a service ace by Michal Kucza. Though the Raiders actually had more kills in the first set, the Cougars out-swung Rivier the rest of the match 29-23. Vahalla led the way with 10 kills and was the only player on either side to reach double-digits. On match point number two, it was setter Alex Barnhard who secured the victory with a well-timed kill at 24-22.
The match against Johnson & Wales saw 15 of the Cougars' 16 players hit the court. Ed Jedziniak and Josh Haimann had six kills each and Barnhard had 20 assists.
Kean will have 10 days off before resuming play at home on March 20 against Berkeley College.
