Whittier, Calif. (3/8/13) – Sophomore Charles Thielmann tossed a complete game, but LaVerne University was able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Kean University baseball team, 2-1.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, senior Cody Hazel dunked a ball into the gap in right center, reaching second.  Junior George Holland then found the gap in left center to push across what would be the winning run.

The Leopards (10-4) tied the game at one-all in the fifth as rookie Michael Reyes lined a shot down the leftfield line for a triple, scoring Jared Hovsepian who reached on a leadoff single.

The Cougars (6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second as junior Joe O'Connor got things started with a double.  After a successful sacrifice moved him to third, sophomore Anthony Fischetti placed an infield single down the chalk for an RBI.

Thielmann (2-1) suffered the loss for Kean.  He allowed two runs in eight innings of work.  He struck out six and scattered eight hits.

Offensively O'Connor (pictured left) was 2-for-4.

Both teams square off again on Saturday at 1 p.m. local time.
