#1/2 Baseball Blanks Rutgers-Newark, 10-0

Newark, N.J. (4/11/13) – Sophomore Charles Thielmann tossed a complete game shutout as the #1/2 Kean University baseball team breezed past Rutgers-Newark by the final of 10-0.

Thielmann (5-1) (pictured left) scattered four singles and one walk in an efficient 98 pitch outing.  He also struck out four as he faced just four batters over the minimum.  Kean improves to 22-5 overall and 6-1 in NJAC play in their first game since being ranked in the top spot in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll.  The Cougars are riding a seven game winning streak.

After scratching across two runs early thanks to four walks, Kean pulled away scoring seven runs in the fifth and sixth frames.  The Cougars put up a three spot in the fifth as senior Nick Ramagli lined a one-out RBI single and junior Joe O'Connor lofted a sacrifice fly to center.  Junior Nick Zucchero followed with an RBI double down the right field line, giving Kean a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth, junior Tyler Smarslok dunked a bases-loaded single into right while sophomore Andy Lopez lined a sacrifice fly.  O'Connor recorded his third RBI of the day, with a double to left.

O'Connor and Smarslok finished with two hits a piece while junior Shane Alvarez collected a game-high three hits (3-for-5) with a double, run scored and RBI.

Scarlet Raiders' Brian Kokos and Steve Tamayo each tallied two hits to account for all of Rutgers-Newark's (7-19, 2-5 NJAC) offense in the loss.

The two teams are scheduled to matchup again on Friday at Jim Hynes Stadium at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
