CAMDEN, N.J. (4/13/13) – The Kean University softball team used a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Courtney Yard to sweep Rutgers-Camden 4-0 and 9-0 on Saturday. Yard has now thrown four-consecutive NJAC shutouts and has not allowed an earned run in the last 35.1 innings of conference play.
Sandra Binkiewicz knocked a two-out, 2-RBI double in the first inning of game one to put the Cougars up early. Katie Schuh scored from second and Yard raced home all the way from first on the play.
In the fifth, Megan Cegielski doubled to start things off and Schuh got on base again in front of Yard. The hurler stepped to the plate and promptly doubled to left, driving in both runners and staking Kean to a 4-0 lead.
That was all the scoring needed in the first game; Yard struck out six and faced only one batter over the minimum of 21.
The Stockton, N.J. native continued her dominance in the second game. She struck out eight batters in the shortened game and allowed only two hits – both in the final inning.
Kean scored in all but one of the innings of game two. Binkiewicz (pictured left) hit another two-out 2-RBI double to start things, and Schuh knocked in Jill Martin for a lone run in the second.
Kelly Moorehead, Binkiewicz and Tiffany Varriello all singled in the third as the Cougars broke it open with three more runs. One run in the fourth and two more in the sixth gave Kean the advantage needed to end the second game early.
Kean will travel to William Paterson University on Tuesday for an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
