JERSEY CITY, N.J. (4/2/13) – Sophomore Courtney Yard set new Kean University pitching and hitting records while twirling a one-hitter in the Cougars' doubleheader sweep of New Jersey City University on Tuesday. Kean dominated 21-1 in game one and went on to win 11-3 in the nightcap.
After just one and a half innings, the Cougars had pounded out 13 runs. Yard drove in four of those 13 runs with a pair of hits, while Jill Martin knocked a bases-loaded triple down the rightfield line for three ribbies.
The game turned historic as it wound down; Kean scored the most runs in a game since 1998 with 21 runs in game one and set or tied at total of three individual single-game highs.
Yard (pictured right) set a new single-game record with seven RBIs, besting the previous record of six set by Sue Stumph and Janie Lemchak in separate games in 1988. The sophomore hurler also set a new record for strikeouts in a game with 12, besting the previous mark of 11 she shared with Maryelise Gierke.
Remarkably, Yard set the mark in just five innnigs; she struck out 12 of the Gothic Knights' 15 outs.
Junior shortstop Kelly Moorehead (pictured left) tied a Kean single-game record with four runs scored in game one as well.
Kean jumped out ahead in the second game with seven runs in the first inning of game two; Moorehead and Katie Schuh both had 2 RBIs in the first for the Cougars.
The game remained close most of the way, but Kean rallied for four runs in the fifth to reach the run-rule level. Megan Cegielski doubled for two ribbies in the final frame and Sandra Binkiewicz and Casey Glatts had one RBI each.
The Cougars will return home on Thursday for two games against Moravian College beginning at 3 p.m.
