Yard-Work: Sophomore Hurls Two Shutouts and Hits a Homer

UNION, N.J. (4/9/13) – Sophomore Courtney Yard starred in the circle and at the plate as the Kean University softball team blanked NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark 4-0 and 8-0 on Tuesday. Yard pitched all 12 innings for the Cougars and hit a solo homerun in game two.

Game One

In the third inning, the Cougars were able to push two runs across with some small ball. After the loading the bases on just one hit, Kelly Moorehead delivered a sacrifice fly to center and Casey Glatts drove in the second run of the inning with a RBI groundout.

Kelsey Hannan brought home Jill Martin in the bottom fourth inning with a RBI single, and then stole home as part of a 1st-and-3rd two-out double-steal.

Yard carried a no-hitter in to the seventh inning but had her bid broken up on a single to right field by Gabby Spinella with one out. She finished the game to earn the shutout and allowed just the one hit and one walk while striking out four. Katie Schuh finished game one with three singles.

Game Two

Yard provided the first run of the game in the second inning with a scalding line-drive homerun to centerfield. The Cougars then put runners on first and third and this time Martin (pictured left) stole home to make it 2-0. Schuh added an RBI single in the inning as well.

With Kean leading 4-0 in the fifth, the Cougars pushed across two runs on a 2-RBI single by Glatts and reached the eight-run plateau with two more unearned runs to finish off the Scarlet Raiders and cement the NJAC sweep.

Kean will remain home and host Lebanon Valley College on Thursday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
