Selinsgrove, Pa. (8/31/13) - Senior Stephanie Soares (pictured left) scored two goals and chipped in an assist as the Kean University field hockey team defeated St. John Fisher in the Championship game of the Connie Harnum Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars did not waste much time getting on the scoreboard, notching the first goal of the contest just 1:24 in. Soares sent in a penalty corner attempt, and fellow senior Julie Knodt connected the pass into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.
Midway through the first stanza, Soares added her first goal of the year to give the Cougars (2-0) a two goal cushion.
The Cardinals (1-1) cut the lead in the half with a little over a minute to go in the first half, as Stacy Skidmore knocked in a crossing pass and put the ball into the back the Cougars cage.
Soares would then add the insurance goal with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest, as she scored off a feed from Marissa Robinson to give the Cougars the final 3-1 victory.
In the second half, the stifling defense of the Cougars limited the Cardinals to just two shots. For the game, the Cougars outshot the Cardinals 25-5, and had a whopping 18-4 edge in penalty corners.
Katie DiCarlo and Brooke Roderick shared the duties in goal for the Cougars, with DiCarlo making one save. Danielle Famolaro made eight saves for the Cardinals, who also had three defensive saves.
The Cougars make their home debut Tuesday, September 3, as they take on Marywood University at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
