UNION, N.J. (9/14/13) – On a day where the Kean University field hockey team dominated the stat sheet, senior defender Julie Knodt made sure the team came away with a victory by scoring six minutes into the first overtime period. The Cougars outshot Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 26-1 in the match.
In fact, the Cougar defense did not allow a shot in regulation. That continued a streak that dated from the first half of Tuesday's game against Vassar College, making it over 100 minutes in which Kean had held its opponents without a shot.
Kean also owned a remarkable advantage in penalty corners; the Cougars took 25 on Saturday while RPI was not awarded a single one.
Marissa Robinson had three shots to lead the Cougars at halftime. Kean earned 10 penalty corners in the first half and did not concede any, but neither team had any truly dangerous scoring chances.
Late in the second half the scoreless game was growing tense. Stephanie Soares fired a shot that needed to be saved by RPI defender Julia Wright with 18 minutes to go, and a Kean goal was on the board for nearly five minutes while the officials discussed it before eventually waving it off at 54:31.
The teams went to overtime, where Rensselaer had by far its best scoring chance as Brianna Kilberg broke in one-on-one with Kean goaltender Katie DiCarlo. The sophomore keeper (pictured left) kicked away the only Engineer shot of the night to keep the Cougars in the game.
Kean finally capitalized on the 25th and final penalty corner of the night. Soares initiated the play on the goalline, and Knodt whacked at it down in front. The rebound came off the goaltender and back to the Mount Laurel native who sent it into the hardwood for the sudden-death goal.
The field hockey program improved to 6-0 on the year with Saturday's victory.
The Cougars will open up NJAC play on Tuesday night with a 7p.m. tilt against William Paterson University.
