GALLOWAY, N.J. (9/21/13) – Sheldon Palmer scored the first goal and set up the second as the Kean University men's soccer team opened NJAC play with a 2-0 win over Richard Stockton College on Saturday. It was the second-straight game-winning goal for the senior, while Brad Watkins and the Cougar defense posted their second-straight shutout.
The first half was tight and conservative. The teams managed only nine shots combined and put just one shot on goal apiece. The Ospreys earned the only two corner kicks of the half.
As has been their pattern all year, the Cougars turned it on in the second period. They dominated the shots 13-5 and did not allow any challenges against Watkins in the cage. In contrast, Kean put eight shots on goal in the second half.
Freshman Akwasi Adu set up Palmer (pictured left) five minutes into the half for the first goal of the match. It was his second goal of the year; both were the Cougars' game-winners this week. For Adu, it was the second assist of his collegiate career.
Kean held on to its slim lead for the next half-hour, until Palmer chipped a pass over to Kevin Olaya. The freshman headed the ball in for the second goal of the game (and his career) to cement the NJAC win for the Cougars.
For its next game, Kean will had to Vassar College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
