Field Hockey Tops Division II Mercy 2-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (9/27/13) – Sophomore goaltender Katie DiCarlo earned her fifth shutout of the season while seniors Korri Thompson and Stephanie Soares provided the offense in a 2-0 win by the Kean University field hockey team over Division II Mercy College on Friday night.

It was as balanced a game as a team can play as the Cougars scored a goal in each half while asking their goaltender to make just one save in each period as well. Kean outshot the Mavericks 21-9 and led 24-8 in penalty corners.

Kean got on the board first off of one of those 24 corners. Julie Knodt took the initial big drive from the top of the circle and Thompson deflected the ball high and just under the crossbar at 19:34 for her 10th goal of the year. For Knodt, it was her fourth assist.

Early in the second half, Soares (pictured left) scored unassisted by beating her defender left and firing a shot to the upper right-hand side of the cage. It was her eighth goal of 2013 and she would finish the night with a total of eight shots.

From there the Kean defense took over, highlighted by senior captain Diane Boccella's defensive save – her third of the year. That play and a final save by DiCarlo helped preserve Kean's sixth shutout of the season.

Kean will turn right around and take on Washington and Lee University on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Kean Alumni Stadium.
