HOBOKEN, N.J. (9/7/13) – The Kean University field hockey team used an assist and a pair of goals by Korri Thompson to hand their in-state rival Stevens Institute of Technology a 3-0 loss on Saturday. In their last time out, Stevens took down #12 TCNJ 4-3.
Kean got on the board with a beautiful goal by Thompson eight minutes in. The senior had the ball in the left-hand side of the circle, turned her stick over and was able to lift the ball over the Duck goaltender's left shoulder and into the side netting. It was her fourth goal in as many games for the Cougars.
The first half momentum swung back and forth throughout the first 35 minutes; shots were 9-7 in favor of Stevens at the break. Sophomore Katie DiCarlo (pictured left) played very well in the Cougar cage and came through on all five saves she was asked to make on the night.
Thompson got the second goal of the day as well. Freshman Bridgette Bottinelli walked in on the Duck defense and hit a shot from the right side. The ball trickled though the Stevens goaltender and appeared headed for the cage, but Thompson made sure it went in with a goalline whack that doubled the Cougar lead.
In the final minute, Kean converted a penalty corner. Stephanie Soares initiated the play on the endline and the ball went to Thompson. Thompson took a shot intentionally wide that Soares was able to deflect in for the score that iced it for the Cougars.
In addition to their three goals, Kean was awarded a penalty stroke and had one ball in the net called back for an infraction. The game's final shot tally was 15-13 in favor of the Ducks.
The Cougars will return to Union for a four-game homestand beginning Tuesday against Vassar at 7 p.m.
