HAVERFORD, Pa. (9/8/13) – Freshman wunderkind Akwasi Adu scored his third goal in as many games to clinch an upset by the Kean University men's soccer program over No. 14 Haverford College. Adu's strike in the 87th minute coupled with Dominick DeLello's second half equalizer spurred the Cougar comeback.
It was the Fords who scored early in the match. Jamie Reingruber assisted Ford Bohrmann seven minutes in to give the hosts a 1-0 lead on the final day of the Jimmy Mills Tournament.
Aside from that episode, however, the first half was nearly dead even on the scoresheet: both teams took six shots and four corner kicks, while Kean goalkeeper Tyler Callahan was asked to make just one more save than his counterpart Nick Kahn.
The second half commenced with Kean still looking for the equalizer for nearly the next 20 minutes. The Cougars finally found it when DeLello streaked in and scored an unassisted goal at 62:52 to knot the game at one. It was the senior midfielder's third goal of the season.
The sides continued to battle for the go-ahead goal; the shots were exactly even in the second half as well, though Kean did not allow a shot on goal in the final 45.
With the final second half minutes ticking away, the Cougars earned a corner kick opportunity and Adu (pictured left) capitalized on the opportunity by knocking in his second-straight game-winning goal as the Kean side erupted in celebration.
The Cougars would hold on in the final two minutes and head home happy with the Jimmy Mills Championship.
It was Haverford's (3-1) first loss of the season. Kean moves to 4-1 with the victory.
The Cougars will play their first home match of the year on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Hunter College on the East Campus.
