UNION, N.J. (10/4/14) – The Kean University defense made a first-half goal stand up for a 1-0 triumph for the women's soccer team over Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
Kean scored in the first on a fantastic shot by junior Emily Martinelli. After getting a pass from freshman Bridget Parise, Martinelli had space but was a good way away from the Raptor cage. The Marlton native lifted a high, arcing shot over the overzealous goalkeeper's reach and neatly into the twine for the game's first goal at 35:19.
The Cougars outshot Camden 7-4 in the first half, but they did ask goalkeeper KC Nunez to make three first –period saves. None were better than the one she snared with her fingertips with two minutes to go in the first half.
Kean had more shots (8-6) and corner kicks (3-2) in the second half, but Camden had the better scoring chances. The Raptors had a goal ruled offside after good stop by Nunez (pictured left). The rebound was put into the Cougar cage but the side referee's flag was up, nullifying the play.
In the final seconds, Camden was awarded a free kick deep inside the Cougar zone. The Raptors served in one final challenge for Nunez, but the junior goalie lept up and captured it as time expired for the pivotal conference win. It is her seventh shutout of the season.
The Cougars raised their record to 8-4 on the year and 2-3 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden fell to 1-3 in the league and 4-7-1 overall.
Kean will hit the road for an NJAC date with William Paterson University in one week on Saturday at 1 p.m.
