UNION, N.J. (11/12/14) – The Kean University field hockey team fell to Arcadia University 4-1 in the ECAC quarterfinal round on Wednesday. The fourth-seeded Cougars and fifth-seeded Arcadia both came into the game sporting identical 13-7 records.
As the game began, Arcadia owned the bulk of the offensive production; the Knights had five of the game's first seven shots and had taken three penalty corners without allowing one in the first 10 minutes. But Kean had four saves, including one by defender Katie-Lynne Lussier (pictured left) to keep Arcadia off the board to start.
The Cougars found success on the counter-attack and had an odd-man rush develop in the eighth minute. Bridgette Bottinelli pushed the ball deep into Arcadia territory and took a pair of shots at the cage. The second one was kicked about 10 yards out, where Marissa Robinson was waiting to re-direct it back into the goal for the score. Bottinelli earned an assist on the play after working hard to set it up.
Undaunted, Arcadia continued to push the pace after the score. The Knights had a goal called back five minutes after Kean's marker, and then scored a very similar goal to Kean's off a rebound at 14:42 to knot the game.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Arcadia's Molly Goldstein posted a pair of goals within six minutes of each other to give the Knights a 3-1 halftime lead. The second one was a particularly impressive backhanded goal that was her sixth of the season.
Arcadia added a final goal 15 minutes into the second half. After that, the Knights held Kean to just one second-half shot as time ran out for the hosts.
The Cougars end the 2014 season with a 13-8 record. They advanced to both the NJAC and ECAC Tournaments for the first time in school-history.
