Women's Basketball Holds Off Ramapo

UNION, N.J. (12/3/14) – The Kean University women's basketball team got a double-double effort from Jazmine Davis to fight off a pesky Ramapo College team on Wednesday night in NJAC action. The Cougars led for 93 percent of the game, but only for 30 seconds with a double-digit lead as the Roadrunners (3-3, 0-3 NJAC) battled to the end. Kean is now 4-2 and 2-1 in the league.

The Cougars jumped out to a blistering 10-2 start, led by Najha Treadwell who was a force all over the court. The freshman had six points, three rebounds, a block and a steal before five minutes had even gone by in the game.

But the Roadrunners mounted an impressive 13-0 run to take their only lead midway through the first half. Doris Ilic paced the visitors with seven points during that stretch.

Shay Collins finally snapped the RC streak by hitting a three-pointer while she was fouled to put the Cougars back up by one.

Kean increased its lead to seven by halftime. The teams combined to be called for 28 personal fouls in the first half that lasted nearly an hour.

The Cougars maintained a one-or-two possession advantage through the first 10 minutes of the second period.

With 6:50 to go, Ramapo earned a pair of free throws while they trailed by one point. But Ramapo missed the opportunity to tie. Collins (pictured left) came down on the ensuing possession and hit a trey to bump the Cougar lead back up to four.

AnnaRose Pierre hit numerous field goals to keep the Kean lead healthy down the stretch. The senior guard finished with 13 points.

With six seconds on the clock, Collins was fouled with Kean up by just two. She faced a one-and-one situation at the line but hit both pressure-packed free throws to finally put the tight game on ice. Those final two makes helped Collins finish the contest tied with Pierre with a game-high 13 points.

But Davis was perhaps the most valuable Cougar on the floor on Wednesday, earning a double-double with 10 points and a remarkable 17 rebounds for Kean against a pair of six-foot Ramapo post players. As a testament to her dominance, no Roadrunner finished with more than 10 boards.

The Cougars will head to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday for another NJAC matchup with the Scarlet Raptors at 4 p.m.
