UNION, N.J. (2/8/14) – The Kean University women's basketball team forced 34 turnovers in 40 minutes and came up with 21 steals in its 81-53 win over Rutgers-Camden on Saturday. Sophomore Jazmine Davis scored 19 points, shot 9-of-11 from the field, had seven steals, six rebounds and a pair of assists as her well-rounded performance sparked the Cougars.
The Kean defense went through multiple stretches without allowing any RU offense to develop. The Raptors scored just four points in the first seven minutes and went the final 7:10 of the first half without a field goal. The Cougars used that stretch to build a 15-20 deficit into a 31-20 halftime lead.
Freshman Essence Casey (pictured left) was a big part of that defense, as she matched Davis with seven steals to lead the team and added six points, three assists and three rebounds. Her classmate Jaquetta Owens picked apart the Camden defense and racked up eight assists on the afternoon.
Kean dominated the points in the paint, scoring 58 to Camden's 24. Though the lead did change hands seven times in the contest, the Cougars led comfortably and continuously over the final 25 minutes of game play.
Four players were in double figures for Kean (12-9, 9-5 NJAC): Davis with 19, Owens and Kenya Adams with 15 apiece and Shay Collins with 10.
Camden was led by Michelle Onu, who finished with 13 as the Raptors fell to 4-15 on the year. They are still looking for their first NJAC win of the season.
The Cougars will hit the road for three big NJAC games next week, beginning with a make-up date against Richard Stockton College at 6 p.m. on Monday.
