Union, N.J. (3/1/14) – Junior
Charles Thielmann picked up his second win of the
young season as the #3/5 Kean University baseball team blanked
FDU-Florham, 8-0, Saturday afternoon.
Thielmann (2-0) allowed just four singles in seven innings of
work. He struck out four with no walks in the efficient
outing.
Designated hitter Nick Meoli had two hits for the
Devils (0-1) in their season opener.
Kean got on the scoreboard right out of the gate as junior
Andy Lopez made it 2-0 with a two RBI double with
one out. Sophomore Sal Taormina added a run
with an RBI single to stake Kean a 3-0 lead after one.
After tacking on two more in the fifth, the Cougars (4-1) sealed
the win with a three run seventh. With the bases loaded and
one out, senior Tyler Smarslok lofted a sacrifice
fly, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Ryan
Kelley. Shane Alvarez closed out
the scoring as he crossed the plate on a throwing error after
swiping third.
Kelley (pictured left) had a 4-for-4 day with two runs scored
while Taormina registered two hits on the afternoon.
Starter Chris Roberts suffered the loss for
FDU-Florham. He allowed five runs, four earned, in five
innings.
Kean returns to action on Sunday when they take on the College
of Mt. St. Vincent at 11 a.m. in a rescheduled matchup.
