No. 24 Softball Sweeps Ramapo on Senior Day

UNION, N.J. (4/26/14) – The Kean University softball swept Ramapo College 1-0 and 9-2 on senior day to wrap up the regular season with a 29-9 record and a 14-4 mark in the NJAC. Kean is involved in a two-way tie for third place in the league, but because of tiebreakers will be the No. 4 seed in next week's NJAC Tournament.

Kean starter Courtney Yard was the star of the first game, hurling a complete-game one-hitter for her fourth shutout of the season. She struck out 11 Roadrunners and did not allow a runner past second base.

For the only run the Yard would need, Tiffany Varriello led off the second inning with a double to rightfield. The next two hitters got out, but senior Jill Martin came through with a clutch two-out RBI double to plate Varriello and give Kean the game's lone tally.

In game two, Yard led off the second inning with a walk and Kelly Moorehead also singled in the frame to help bring in the first Kean run of game two.

In the third, the Cougars exploded for four runs. Martin, Megan Cegielski, Emily Sabo and Sandra Binkiewicz all singled before Moorehead smacked her fifth homer of the season to centerfield to drive in three.

Amanda Berezny singled and Cegielski brought her around to make the score 5-0. Kean nearly brought the game to an early end with three runs in the fifth on hits by Moorehead, Tonianne DeMatteo, Berezny, Martin and Cegielski but stranded the mercy-rule-inducing run at third.

Yard also earned the victory in the second game, pitching 5.2 innings of relief with five more strikeouts. She now has 17 wins on the year.

Kean will travel to Rowan University on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the opening round of the NJAC Championship. The Profs and Cougars split their doubleheader on April 3, with Kean falling 2-0 before prevailing 1-0 in the nightcap.

After the first game, all six teams in the championship will head to No. 1 seed William Paterson University to decide the NJAC Championship over the weekend.
