GLASSBORO, N.J. (4/3/14) – Kean University starter Rebecca Rotola pitched a two-hit shutout over Rowan University on Thursday to salvage a split with the NJAC rival Profs. Kean won the second game 1-0 after falling 2-0 in the opener.
Rotola pitched all seven innings in the game two victory. She struck out three and did not allow a runner past second base in the first six innings.
In the fateful seventh inning with the score tied at 0-0, Emily Bissonnette led off with a single up the middle. Fellow freshman Amanda Berezny then sacrficed her to second. With two down after a popup, senior catcher Jill Martin (pictured left) wallopped a double to left field that drove in the runner to make the score 1-0.
Down to their final three outs, the Profs made things interesting. Rowan earned a leadoff walk, and a two-out error put the tying run at third and the game-winning run at first. But Rotola induced a game-ending grounder to Emily Sabo as the Cougars held on for the nail-biting win.
Senior outfielder Megan Cegielski had five of Kean's 12 hits on the day.
In game one, Courtney Yard flirted with a no-hitter for the third-straight game, as the only baserunner she allowed in the first 4 2/3 innings was a hit batter who got no further than first base. But Rowan's Ashley DeYoung hit a two-out, two-run homer to right-centerfield in the sixth to provide the only runs of game one. It was the first time all year Kean lost by more than one run.
The Cougars will return home to host the College of New Jersey on Saturday.
