Newark, N.J. (5/16/14) – Amherst College
put the game away with a four run fifth inning as they topped the
Kean University baseball team by a final of 7-1.
With the loss the Cougars (32-13) will face off against NJAC
rival Rutgers-Camden in an elimination game on Saturday at 1:15
p.m. With the win, Amherst advances to face SUNY Cortland at
4:30 p.m.
Amherst (30-9) jumped on board with a single run in the first
without the aid of a hit as Taiki Kasuga scored on a
throwing error after swiping third.
The Cougars tied it up in the third as senior Joe
O'Connor lined a two-out single, scoring catcher
D.J. Ross who reached on a leadoff single.
The Lord Jeffs took the lead for good in their half of the
fourth as Tyler Jacobs lined a one out RBI double and
Andrew Vandini followed with an RBI single, giving Amherst
a 4-2 lead after four.
Amherst put the game out of reach with a four spot in the bottom
of the fifth, using three infield hits to start off the frame.
Junior Matt Mantione (5-3) suffered the
complete game loss. He allowed six earned runs and eight
hits.
John Cook earned the complete game win for the Lord
Jeffs. Cook allowed five hits and one walk with five
strikeouts.
