Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 13 Montclair State in Skyline Championship

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (5/3/14) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team fell to No. 13 Montclair State University in the Championship Game of the Skyline Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Red Hawks went up 8-0 on their way to a 17-4 victory.

After an initial save by Kean's Dino Vitale, Zach Schreck started the scoring for Montclair on its second possession. Schreck scored again on the next trip down to put the Red Hawks up 2-0 early. Five minutes into the game, Schreck found Steve Danyluk streaking toward the goal for the game's third tally.

In the closing minutes of the first, Schreck cemented his first-period hat trick with a sly behind-the back shot that made the score 6-0 Red Hawks after one.

Vincent Ferraro finally ended the Cougar drought by winning a good one-on-one battle to the right of the MSU cage. After engaging his defender he used the Red Hawk as a screen for his low shot that found its way into the twine. It made the score 8-1.

With six seconds remaining, Sam Morrissey iced the dominant first period for Montclair with a goal from Brett Mangan. The count was 11-1 at the break.

Kean scored the first goal one minute into the second half. Anthony Carpenter fed John Marcelli for a one-timer in front.

With Kean up two men, Matt Speciale powered the ball through a pile at the net to get the Cougars' third goal. Skyline Player of the Year Richard Cheifitz had the assist on the score. Marcelli (pictured left) assisted on a fourth quarter goal for Brad Mills with 4:22 remaining in the game.

The Kean defense allowed just six second-half goals. But MSU had built up its advantage too high for the Cougars to threaten in the second half and the Red Hawks held on for their seventh-straight Skyline championship.

The Cougars end their 2014 season with a 16-3 record; a new school-record for wins in a season.
