Field Hockey Takes the Title at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (8/30/14) – Freshman Krista LaMaina scored twice and sophomore Bridgette Bottinelli netted the game-winner as the Kean University field hockey team won its second-straight Connie Harnum Classic Championship 3-2 over Susquehanna University on Saturday.

LaMaina opened the scoring with what the Cougars hope will become a familiar refrain in Union for the next four years: a goal from LaMaina to LaMaina. Shauna assisted Krista (pictured left) for the first goal of the game at 10:59 of the first half. Five minutes later, Krista scored again to stake Kean to a 2-0 lead. Officially, that tally was unassisted but Shauna was once again a big part of the play.

Before the first half was over, Susquehanna had tied the proceedings with two goals of their own, including one with just 13 ticks left before halftime as the teams went into the break tied at two.

Both teams buckled down defensively in the second half. The sides combined for 10 saves in the second after posting five total in the first. Katie DiCarlo pitched a second-half shutout for Kean to give her team the chance to win.

With only five minutes remaining in regulation, heroine of the weekend Bridgette Bottinelli found the ball on her stick and hammered in her second-game winning goal in as many days for Kean. The unassisted strike was her fourth in the two games. With only four shots on goal registered thus far on the year, the sophomore has scored on every shot she has taken this year.

The Kean defense made the lead stand up and the squad celebrated its second-straight Connie Harnum Classic triumph.

The Cougars will remain on the road and take on Marywood University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
