Field Hockey Unleashes Shot Barrage for Win Against Keystone

UNION, N.J. (9/16/14) – The Kean University field hockey team took 47 shots on its way to a 3-1 Tuesday night victory over Keystone College. The Cougars are now 6-2 on the year and have won three games in a row. Keystone sinks to 1-5 with the loss.

The Cougars dominated the first half of play. The ball only crossed into the Kean half of the field three times while the Cougars peppered the Keystone goal with shot after shot, but could not get one past goaltender Emily Hawkins. She made eight saves in the first half, including one on a penalty stroke that she spoiled with 11 minutes remaining.

Kean took 23 shots before Keystone's first (and only) shot of the first half, and finished with 28 shots in the first. The Cougars also held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners but both teams went into halftime scoreless.

Stephanie Rios finally capitalized on the Kean pressure and picked up a loose rebound in front after a short corner. The senior slammed it home for the game's first goal at 39:11.

Four minutes later, Krista LaMaina and Bridgette Bottinelli were on an odd-man rush. LaMaina's pass from the right side was perfect as Bottinelli re-directed it into the cage for Kean's second goal.

Keystone scored on a second half breakaway as well. Bianca Dolac had a good individual effort for the Giants to get their only goal. Hawkins stopped another penalty stroke in the half as well.

With 12 minutes to go in the game, Jordan Colna (pictured left) gave Kean some appreciated insurance with an unassisted goal through traffic in front. It was the first goal of the sophomore's career.

Kean dominated the stat sheet with 47 shots to Keystone's three and 17 corners to one. Hawkins kept her team in the game with 17 saves. Katie DiCarlo won the game in goal for the Cougars.

Up next, Kean will begin NJAC play with a game against Montclair State University on next Wednesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. in Montclair.
